Delaware County areas of suburban Philadelphia.
Why a lactation
consultant?
I am committed to helping mothers and babies learn to breastfeed. I
know how wonderful breastfeeding can be for both mother and baby
– you may already know about the many health benefits of
breastfeeding, but it can also be joyous, loving, and fun!.
However, it often doesn’t start out like that. It can be
hard, especially in the early days, to figure out how to make it
work. When there are other factors causing problems (like a
difficult birth, or jaundice, or nipple pain, or lots of
conflicting advice) it can seem almost impossible. If it hurts
(which happens when your baby isn’t latched deeply onto your
breast), and your baby wants to breastfeed every hour or two, you
may be ready to give up.
Before you give up, or even suffer through difficult times, I
encourage you to get help from an international board certified
lactation consultant.
What is an
IBCLC?
An international board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) is a
health care professional who specializes in the clinical management
of breastfeeding. IBCLC's are certified by the International Board
of Lactation Consultant Examiners Inc. under the direction of the
US National Commission for Certifying Agencies. IBCLCs have passed
a rigorous certification exam and keep their knowledge and skills
up to date through a compulsory recertification program. They are
required to practice within a Code of Ethics. To qualify to sit for
the exam, a candidate must have completed background education in
certain disciplines; have completed comprehensive continuing
education in lactation; and have had extensive practical experience
providing breastfeeding counseling (for most candidates, at least
2,500 hours).
